My friend and I aren't sure, but we want a background for our timeline profile on Facebook. Is that possible? How?

You can't have a background; you can, however, have a "cover" which is a larger picture that can be anything you want.

You cannot change facebook layout. There are some sites that can add a background, but that will only work on your browser because it just inject CSS to the browser that alter facebook CSS to show a background. This means there is no way your friend can see it. But you can play with timeline cover. You can add a big photo or graphic there. Nowadays there are tons of cover galler sites you can add, but If you want more customization I would recommend http://timelinecoverbanner.com
