Sign up, post your 140 character updates as often as you like. Sign up to receive the updates of friends, famous people, or twitters focused on things you're interested in, and sit back and watch the tweets come in. Like Facebook you'll have your own feed page with your own posts, and your main page with both yours and others posts.
You can add hashtags to your messages, words with # before them like #monkeybutlers, and people can subscribe to everything with #monkeybutlers hashed in it and see those messages in their feed.
And you can use @ followed by a name to respond to someone else's tweet and have public conversations, debates or arguments. I'm not sure if you can message people privately since I don't use Twitter and picked all this information up from just being on the internet.
The thing about Twitter is that it's all public.

The best way to use Facebook and Twitter is to not. It's a waste of your time, energy and privacy.
