I've never heard of it. Then again, I'm new to America.

Social networking site where you post "what you are doing" in 140 characters or less.

It's a system of microblogging. People can submit short messages, which are texted to all of their "followers". It is known because many celebrities use it.

Twitter is a social networking website, similar to Facebook but without the fancy profile stuff. Basically, you have a set of "followers" (friends/strangers who choose to be alerted to your status updates), and you too can follow others including celebrities.

An example of a status update:

"Eating Froot Loops right now! So good!" 8:22 am Saturday

It's a social networking site to share something with the world or approved-only followers. For example, if you follow you're friend they may post Going to Walmart and post Going to the dance, show up if you want to. Or you can follow news feeds and stay up to date on what you're interested in.

On Twitter you have an account where on the home page you post thoughts, news, anything you want under 140 characters long. You can follow people so their tweets will show up on your homepage, and people can follow you and they will see your tweets.

As Twitter puts it:
Twitter can give a voice to even the weakest signals because of its simplicity. Users can access Twitter on powerful broadband connections via a video game console or through faint connections in rural areas via SMS on a simple mobile phone. You can also access Twitter through more than 50,000 third-party Internet and mobile applications.

Just remember, how you use Twitter is completely up to you. Follow hundreds of people. Follow a dozen. Post every hour. Post never. Search for your favorite topics and create lists. Or not. You are in control on Twitter.

You can also use Twitter for your business or band.
