I was looking at a estranged relative who I do not get on with that well. The first time I looked his profile was public, when I checked the following day it was private!
I don't want him to think I've been snooping on him! Does he know?

No, there is no way to know who has viewed your profile.

There is no way at all to see if someone viewed your profile (unless you work at facebook and look at the logs, somehow).
So no, unless he works at facebook he will not be able to check at all (and even if he did he has to be on a higher level of authority anyway).
Don't worry about it.
Most likely he just changed his privacy settings.
