I keep getting notifications from the new close friends thing even though I disabled it? And I also never added anyone to my close friends yet I get notifications when they update their status?

I believe there is a bug at the moment so that someone you have a lot of contact with becomes your close friend and then the notification system is automatically turned on. To turn it off just click on “Close Friends†on the left side of your news feed. Then, at the top right, there will be a drop-down for Notifications.
There it is! Turn that bad boy off...
The default, of course, is “On.†Turn those puppies off. Unless, of course, you enjoy getting random alerts for no apparent reason.
You can also set people as your close friends from their profile in the top right hand corner of the screen, if you want to get notifications from people.
