I haven't added them to my "close friends" list, it's empty I checked. But that symbol with the star and like a bit of paper or something keeps coming up underneath. It happened twice today and that's the first I've noticed it. Does it mean they added me to their list or is it just a mistake that I should contact facebook about, or is there another reason?

Because your friend's settings have it so that when they update their status or profile pictures, their friends can see what they updated.

I think your privacy settings are set to do this. Check them, and change it if needed.
