I am just going to start playing with Twitter but don't know anyone who uses it. How can I find people with the same interests as I have?

One way is to check out Twitter directories - they let people add themselves under a variety of interests & categories so others can find them. I will add the links to them below, plus a post with more Twitter resources.

There are so many ways to find and increase your twitter followers number..like..
If you have a blog/website.. you can ask your readers to connect you with twitter
If you have some $$$ to spend.. you an buy a banner ad to target the audiences that are related to your niche
You can use twitter as a customer tool to answer your reader questions.
If you are a member of any of the online forums... you can put your twitter link in your signature.
And some many other ways also..
