does it come up with a message that someone tried to and failed? my friend tried logging into her boyfriend's facebook to find something out but she couldn't get the password right.

Yes, if someone has logged in from a far away computer or tried to guess your password over a certain number of times, when you log in it will ask you to verify your account by answering your recovery questions, it will also tell you where the other person tried to log into your account from if it is far away
