How old was your kid when you allowed him/her have their own facebook account? - ninaaltaev - 11-09-2012 06:18 PM

My daughter is 10 and I feel that she is way too young to have her own facebook. I know that there are many parental controls that may be set but it still makes me uncomfortable.
Please, only answer if you are a parent!

10? the only reason people use facebook is for friends so if she has friends on there she can talk to them, but there is privacy settings if ur worried about pedofiles

I'm 15 and my 9 year old brother has one, and so do a lot of other little kids I know. I think it would be fine if you just make sure she knows NOT to add anyone she doesn't know, and just keep an eye on her Smile

If you have to lie to get it...is it right to have it? Because you are teaching your kid to lie.

It's against Facebook's term of service for users under 13 to have accounts

I let my girls have Facebook accounts at 13 and 11. But in order for the 11 year old to have the account we had to lie about her birthday and I thought to myself "what kind of example am I setting if I am lying to get a facebook account?" And what is so important on Facebook to violate my principle of truthfulness? They associate with their friends at school. And yes, there are friends who have moved that they could be in closer communication with through instant pictures and the wall and whatever, but there is email and text. Neither of them have facebook anymore. I don't see the value in it other than it is cool.
