i have 100 friends and 30 relatives but, i never once uploaded any photos...a few profile pictures. A lot of my friends in high school upload pictures i comment on their pictures but, i don't care much about uploading pictures because in about 40 years i am gonna say "why did i upload this?"

Its something I would recommend but to answer your question. No, Its not necessary. You can choose to upload a picture or not.

You can have your choice. In my opinion, if you upload pictures to facebook and share with your friends, your friends would like to see. More share, more happiness. So why not.

uploading pictures or posting infos about your self is a way to 'AUTHENTICATE' your profile, but it is really the user's choice if you want to upload your pictures and post infos about you... just be careful not to post everything about you, you can manage your privacy settings so that you can choose who can view your photos and your infos.

I think it all depends on your own opinion. If you want to upload your pictures, just upload them. If you don't, just don't do it.
However, if you upload some pictures when you were travelling, I think, your friends likes to view them and leave some comments to you.
