I have a large following on YouTube and are going to be doing some travel blogs. I've mostly been sticking with royalty free music and music from friend's bands with permission.
I really would like to embody the feel of where I am travelling with local music and would be more than happy to give credit in the video by saying the band name, where to find them online via twitter, facebook, or YouTube or their website in the video. I would just use short clips of their tracks for specific scenes with their permission.
With my following, it would get a ton of exposure for them from outside their city if they aren't touring, and it would help bring better energy to my videos. I would speak to them directly in person and get have them sign the rights to use it in my video.
Do local music artists do trades for exposure or do most strictly stick with buying rights to the track?

Depends on whether you are monetizing your videos. If you are making thousands from your videos then it would be the right thing to give them a taste. As a muso myself I am always happy to make deals either for a small fee or a link to my websites. Best thing to do is talk to them, I think most will be happy with the extra exposure and all musicians want a big audience, if you can provide that you should do well. Good luck...
