Is it bad for a 13 year old to have a Facebook? - DivaBarbi7 - 11-09-2012 06:26 PM

I asked my mom if I can have a Facebook account. She says no because there are a lot of predators out there. I understand were she is coming from but still is their not a thing on facebook were you can only add you friends. So no one that is not your friends just get on it.Another thing is that I know all of the rules ex: Don't give personal info. Don't give out your password to anyone et.

You can make it private and only allow friends you've invited.

Like you say ... never give out info. Don't even mention the school you go to.

Yes. Try http://skidekids.com/ instead.
It has more features, including homework help.
Don't assume it's lame- it's pretty cool, IMHO.

“As a father of two,and someone in the law enforcement community,
I definitely would recommend skid-e-kids to all parents. It is the only
social network that has come close to addressing major issues and
concerns of parents, as far as online social networking is concern.”
I take my hat off to those guys.

@Billie-jean Watson -Holy crap. I don't even have kids; and that's a nightmare.

I understand your frustration, but your mom really does have your best interest at heart. Any social network is never foolproof, which means it can be hacked. I know several people recently had theirs hacked and things changed in their accounts. Anyone who can access your account after that can look at photos and get information from them just by seeing things in your pictures. Such as backgrounds of places you are at, school names on clothing, ect... They can also see stuff that you post such as, hanging with your friends at the mall, ect.. Even though you think it's harmless, it really can lead to unwanted things. Better safe than sorry and just appreciate the fact that your mom loves you enough to keep you safe. Smile

You can always keep up with your friends by IM such as a yahoo messenger or private message board that you or your mom can create.
