What SAT score would I need to get in order to get into a decent college? - The Wise Owl - 11-09-2012 06:53 PM

The colleges I am currently interested in are New York University, the University of Michigan, the University of Chicago, Columbia University, and UCLA due to the high rankings of their respective business schools. I feel as if I am well prepared for the exam; I'm just nervous. My GPA is currently 3.795 (unweighted) with all AP and Honors courses. I'm hoping for somewhere around 2100, but would an 1850 be good enough or do I have to shoot for somewhere around 2000?

you would have to aim for the 2000s+ for those colleges.

1900 would be sufficient given your background. Remember, colleges and universities look at the "big picture" when admitting students to their class each year; test scores are usually not the only aspect of your application they review before accepting you. Your high school background is fantastic so a score of 1900 and up would be sufficient, but 2000 would give you a better chance. Columbia and UCLA are highly competitive, so if you can get into the 2000s, you have a great chance of admission, but they won't outright reject you at a 1900.

You can increase your SAT math score by 60 points (on average) by using an app for your graphing calculator DURING the SAT test relative to those who do not use the app. It's called the SAT Operating System and you can download it at http://www.facebook.com/calctech to learn more and view screenshots and communicate with others who have used the software. It helps you by reducing the time needed to solve math problems and it guarantees the accuracy of your calculations. It removes the need to remember any equations since all functions are available to you in an easy to use graphical user interface. It only takes 5 minutes to install!

It's available for all appropriate graphing calculators: TI-83+, TI-83+ Silver Edition, TI-84+, TI-84+ Silver Edition, TI-89, and TI-89 Titanium.

And yes, it is permitted according to the College Board.

I'm still a high school student so I'm not the most reliable source, but I'd say with your GPA 1900 is good enough. But with your GPA you can easily do better. Just make sure you know what you're doing going into the test and you'll be fine.

For UCLA, definitely have to be at LEAST 2000. GPA is a bit low for UCLA. NYU needs to be higher still.
University of Michigan may be a little lower.
I had 3.8 unweighted gpa, 2080 SAT, 32 ACT, Varsity soccer, varsity tennis, 40+ hours of community service with Key Club, Leo club, CSF and I didn't get into UCLA. I'm at UCSD right now
