Does my school have the ability to monitor my school laptop? - Anna - 11-09-2012 07:41 PM

I recently started going to a private high school and they made us buy $900 laptops. I know they monitor web activity at school, since many students have been chastised for logging onto Facebook, Twitter, etc while in school. However, are they able to monitor my laptop when I'm at home, using my own Wifi?

Unless they have a virus or certain viewing program installed(which I doubt) then they cannot monitor you while using other wifi sources. Also, if they were, it would be illegal(I think).

well it is illegal but it has been done, schools in philadelphia got in trouble for doing that. if you are concerned about it, just ask your principle or guidance counselor about it, see what they say.
edit
yes, while your in schoool they can, but when you said at home i assumed you meant can they veiw what your doing on your pc, and they cannot, like i said, recently in philadelphia the school district got in trouble because they put programs on laptops it gave students that allowed them to view not only what they did, but were able to use the web cams to spy on students.

The school can monitor any data that goes to and from their servers whether it's from their computers or yours. The school owns the servers so it's their right to monitor and control any data that passes through them.
