I've been trying to @ celebs, news, organizations etc and only have 2 so far. But then again I just joined a few hours ago. Have any other tips?

Advertise it on facebook and myspace. If you get your friends to follow you, then you'll get some of their friends and their friends' friends.... et al.

You can post your twitter link as a signature in your emails, on your profile on any other social networking sites you may have, and by following others. Usually when you follow someone, they'll follow you back. Not in every case though, and this can take forever to get a big following. There are some twitter follower tools available too, this is another way to get followers on twitter. Here's some information about that here:
