I understand that orange will charge me if I were to send a status update from my phone to facebook but is there any charge at all when facebook sends me notifications? Thank you

It counts as a text message, so it you get charged for them then yes.
But you shouldn't be charged for anything facebook sends you or you send unless you don't have text messaging
