It tags whatever word or phrase you put after it and if a lot people tweet it then it will trend. But leave no spaces or other symbols because it won't tag!

It's called a hashtag and it is like a way to group subjects. So say a group of people all put who puts #bananas in their tweet, I could go on to twitter and search that hashtag and see all the tweets that have that hashtag in them.

Twitter also monitors what the trending hashtags are. In other words, what are the latest popular hashtags. They show them on the front page, I think. (Or somewhere on the site.) So, in this way you can see what is the most up to the minute thing that the internet is crazy about. Also, some people try to manipulate this by spreading the word for heaps of people to all use a certain hashtag. So this artificially inflates the numbers and so called popularity of which ever hashtag they use.

It is a hashtag character and it says what your submission is related to..

For example:

#animals I love dogs and I have to have extra one.. (This is generally about animals)
