I'm new to twitter and I was just wondering what twitter has to do to make my iPhone make the tweeting noise. thanks in advance!

When your iPhone gets the "tweet" noise that means you have gotten a new notification from twitter sorta like when you get a new text message your phone vibrates/rings/sounds to let you know "hey someone just texted you." If you get a new notification from twitter someone has either mentioned you (tweeted you), DM'ed (direct messaged or in your case sent you a private message) or retweeted a tweet you made earlier.
