Such as #HWNJ on Bravo or #TMZ on Fox? I know this is a strange question but I am curious.

it's a hashtag for twitter.So when you use that hashtag you can tweet along with other people who are watching it as well

Whatever network exec thought it woudl be a good idea to put twitter feeds on the screen during TV episodes should be shot. Repeatedly.
