Do I just text the same email I would use for photos and videos? Or do I have to sign up for facebook mobile? I don't want to receive all kinds of notifications from facebook mobile because it will run up my bill, but is that the only way to update my status?

Sign up for fcbook mobile.
Then all you'll have to do is text 3665 to update your status.
