@namehere will send a message to "namehere". #namehere is a hashtag and it's usually what's on the Trending Topic list

Hi ._.,
An @namehere is a Twitter username and it directs to a Twitter profile and a #name is a hash tag. Hash tags are like categories for Twitter. They are used for categorizing or grouping stuff on Twitter. So there can be a #cats hash tag and that means that that's a category for cats on Twitter and tweets (twitter updates) with the #cats hash tag in them will all be grouped under the hash tag #cats.

That's how it works. Hope this helps Smile.
