How can he apply for a lung transplant? He smokes and I know he will have to quit, but for how long before the transplant would take place does he have to quit. I want him to live. We live in Kingman, Arizona. How do we apply for the transplant. Thank you anybody that can help us out.

His lung specialist would have to refer him to a transplant center for an evaluation, which is the first step towards seeing if he would be a good candidate.
I do not know the rules regarding smoking and transplants; I do know that anyone who is actively smoking cannot receive a lung transplant. This is something that could be answered by the lung specialist. Or you may be able to find a Facebook group for lung transplant recipients and people waiting for a lung transplant. (I'm on a page for kidney/pancreas reciipents, which is what I received). You might also want to look up the following websites:

In the mean time, I suggest you have your father-in-law assessed for any sleep disorders. This would include a form of sleep apnea associated with low oxygenation and shallow breathing.
