I'm new to twitter and have no followers, but I am following several celebrities, but in between their tweets I'm seeing tweets from people I'm NOT following... why is that? Also, why do people add the '#' in front of a word or sentence?

Someone must of retweeted what the celebrity tweeted. And this sign "#" is a hashtag, its used for trending topics.
