If you have the same surnam are you bound to be from the same Family tree? - Rich - 11-10-2012 12:54 AM

Just looking on facebook I'm seeing alot of people with my surname. Could they be in my family, they wouldn't really be related, realted. But is is possible?

It's possible you are related, but might not be. Contact those people and see if you can backtrack to a common ancestor.

no. some surnames are really common. such as smith. do you think that every smith in the world is related?!? that would be one big family tree.

It is possible, but unlikely. Many surnames originated from jobs ancestors had (i.e. Bakers were Bakers), or the first name of their father (i.e. John's son became Johnson) so there are bound to be MANY people with the same last name who are not related, but whos ancestors had a father with the same name or same occupation.

no because some surnames are really common like johnson or jones but ibut it's possible

Naahh, it's very unlikely they're related to you unless you actually are related. Many peoples surname comes from their profession if you were to follow their family tree all the way back. If your name was 'Taylor' then you could be a tailor as such. In my case i come from a long line of prostetute.

They could be part of your family tree;and they might not. You would have to trace your family tree to find out for sure. There are a lot of genealogy sites you could check out if you are interested. It could be fascinating.

Not really, especially if you have a commmon surname. for example somthing like green. alot of people have the surname of green and theyre probably not all related to you.maybe one or two could be but i doubt more than that,

there are 303,824,640+ people in the united states, and over 1,800 surnames.that works out to an average of just over 168,791people per name. keep in mind that the average family tree consists of 25 living individuals(marriges, removals, death)with that surname.but even though the odds of you meeting a close relative are extremely slim, there is the occasional discovery of a cousin of something

yes and no really, there are hundreds of surnames and there are loads of common ones like jones and davis but where i live there is anotherfamily called reynolds and we're not related, just share the same surname
