Well, sometimes people find relatives by searching on facebook. He could try and look for his dad there, and check his friend's list.
Or, if he has an unusual last name, he could google for people with that name.
To be honest, he might just bite the bullet, and find out from his father, or paternal relatives.

Start by asking both parents and grandparents. If he doesn't get a straight answer there, he can search online. I have found my husband's half sister with online research.
