Your avatar can be a cartoon or a photo. You can also use your Facebook or Twitter avatar.
STEP 1.
In order for your avatar to appear you must make your Yahoo Profile visible. That is done here:

There is no reason to hide your profile. Nothing appears unless you enter it and turn a switch on. The name can be anything you want.
STEP 2.
To create a cartoon avatar first go to http://avatars.yahoo.com and create one.
STEP 3.
Click on the default avatar in Y!A and select "edit my preferences".

Click on "update photo or avatar" and a small window will open.
You can select the cartoon, Facebook, or Twitter avatar or upload your own photo.
After clicking "use selected photo" be sure to click "submit".
The same photo will appear in the Yahoo Profile.
You can also select the photo in the Yahoo Profile instead.

You can not have a picture or avatar with a hidden profile.

Your Profile is Hidden to make your avatar visible go here http://pulse.yahoo.com/y/settings click Manage Privacy Settings.
Move the second tab so it says Your profile is currently visible.

you can remove it or select it as your display avatar. You can also upload new images from here.

You have got an hidden profile.Make it pubblic on Setting's page http://profile.yahoo.com/y/settings/privacy Otherwise you can't change it,because to put a photo and make a profile picture you need to have a public profile.

Note :You have to wait at least 48 hours after the setting of the photo,that's because Y!Team decides to screen each photo the users put,to avoid and prevent porn or vulgar that were very usual and annoying,and they ruined this site.

Click "My Activity" at top of page
Select "Edit My Preferences"
Click "Update photo or avatar"
Follow instructions to select your photo/avatar
Click "Submit" on bottom of original page when done

Make sure your Pulse profile is not hidden.
