A hashtag on twitter is used for "trends". Trends are the words and phrases being used most by Twitter users at any given time. By using a hashtag such as "#royalwedding", tweets to do with the subject "Royal Wedding" are linked by a common trend, which can be viewed by clicking on the hashtag in a tweet. It's essentially a way of summarising the subject or topic of your tweet.
