Some people are writing things like #IwishIhadpizza, what is the point of putting the number symbol in front of it on say a tweet? I know that everyone is using the "@" symbol as a response is it something like that or what?

@ is, yes, a response, while # is a discussion topic.

On Twitter, if you put # in front of some things, it links to a topic.
Basically it specifies things, phrases, events, etc. instead of people.

in front of something is to make it "trend" on twitter you will notice on the right hand side of your page the trending topics, those are things most people are talking about at that current time.
the @ is a response to someones tweet letting them know that this is specifically for them

The # sign is usually used to make a topic trend on twitter. It also can be used to put that specific tweet into a discussion page, like for example, the one you used, if anyone search "I wish I had pizza" on twitter, their post would be included somewhere in there.
