A hash tag is simply this- #. It is used to tweet random things that are popular going around the web such as #osamaisdead or #sittinondatoilet.

. People use it to add a statement or categorize their tweet, if that makes sense. That way it shows up if whatever they put the # in front of is searched or shows up under trending topics.

It's to tweet trending topics. For example if #idontbelieveyou is the trending topic you'd tweet something like "My phone isn't getting calls...that's why I haven't been getting back to you. Really? #idontbelieveyou"
