I see more disadvantages to those making the vlogs. Soooo many people on YouTube make vlogs that you really have to make yourself stand out if you want to get noticed. Coming up with unique content is very important but you also have to be able to keep producing the unique content again and again to keep peoples' interest.

As for disadvantages to viewers, I guess that would be that there are so many and they don't want to sit there for hours on end waiting to find good/interesting/entertaining ones.

On it's own, there's really no point. However, if you incorporate it into a widescale online marketing campaign -- through use of a website/blog, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, StumbleUpon, etc. -- then you will see some good results.

At this point, it's incredibly difficult to simply upload a video to YouTube and expect great things to happen. Because there is so much content uploaded to YouTube these days, you have to take an active role in getting viewers. This means taking your video and sharing it through other mediums. Don't expect it to take off without putting in a lot of work away from YouTube.
