what are some of the benefits of working for the state/government as opposed to working for a regular company? - its just me - 11-19-2012 02:39 AM
I was considering applying for a state job, but I wasn't sure what the benefit of doing that over applying for a job at a corporation would be. Is working for the state really that much better?

The benefits are typically better (more days off, etc.) The pay is usually not as good. If you want a career in the public sector (government, military support, department of defense), it's good to have government experience. If not, you may find it a frustrating experience - government offices tend to be very bureaucratic and move very slowly.

Most people think gov't jobs pay less than private sector jobs, but this is not as true today as it was in the past. Private sector pay has stagnated over the last ~6 years, while public workers keep on getting their annual raises. The gap in pay is now small in a lot of areas. Plus you get more holidays, health care coverage, pension, etc. Oh yeah, also just 40 hr weeks- many companies will expect you to work 50+ hours per week.

1. Depending on the job, more paid days off. Holidays and the like.
2. Normally, state jobs offer pension plans. I'm currently in a state job and was "vested," (guaranteed a pension), after only 5 years on the job. This is in addition to Social Security which you also receive upon retirement.
3. State jobs also offer paid vacation from the first day, usually earned as a few hours per month. And sick days which are earned the same way.
4. Most states offer free health insurance for the employee and reduced rate for family members on the employee group plan.
The pay is normally less than market, but the benefits normally equal out the difference.
