Some celebrities have Twitter accounts that say, "'Verified Account". How do these accounts get verified? Is the verification process trustworthy?

At the moment, verification program is closed to public. Twitter is planning to have a standardized verification application process, but they are still working on it. It was open for a bit, when they tested the beta, but it's closed again. They only verify hand picked accounts at this time.
As far as I know, verification is really trustworthy.
