What else can the USA gov mandate we purchase in a free market? - towwwdothello - 11-19-2012 02:58 AM

now the precedent is set; any free market service or product can be mandated by a gov dictate.
Public services are not the same as free market products and services, unless they plan to convert that section of the economy into a fixed public service market.
Closest I can can come up with is a "penalty" for non-compliance.

You Conservative-leaning Supreme Court ruled it legal and Constitutional. Get over it.

No one is Mandating you do anything. That's what the fine is for. It gives you an OPTION if you don't want to do it.

Well, haven't we been purchasing education, security by law enforcement, safety by fire departments, clerical work in government offices, etc...etc...? All this doesn't just happen we pay taxes for all this so what is your question again?

This situation is self limiting. Besides, while I'm not certain this really is a 'tax' as a tax is usually universally applied...such as the Social Security TAX. I'd say it stands somewhere between a tax and a fee. Do we have a word in the English language for this? Given the difficulty of passing such legislation it's doubtful that this is going to be a trend...it's more of a one off situation to be replaced with MEDICARE for ALL as soon as the GOP/Tea/Fox/Jesus freak fades from history....hopefully after this next election cycle.

Other mandated purchases:

Medicare
Social Security

We also force folks to contribute tax dollars for military defense.

We have States with mandatory auto insurance.

Oh, BTW. "Obamacare" doesn't force folks to purchase anything. You simply won't be allowed to be a freeloader if you don't have health insurance.
