If you have created lists to restrict certain people from seeing certain things, you can also set which lists you wish to appear online to in Chat. For the lists that aren't checked, the people on it will never see you on until you appear online to them.

Limited profile means in which you can hide some personal info whom you don't wanna show to some people or anyone. If you are online so the person will be able to see you online.
