They add people who they don't know and then they add them back.
That's basically how it works.

Make sure your tweets aren't locked, that way anyone can follow you. You could ask people to RT you. Or, give your name out on here or some other kind of website.

Well, they probably have a lot of friends for one thing. You can direct people to twitter by posting a link on Facebook that says "follow me on Twitter" And hopefully you have something interesting and clever to say on there, in which case followers will find you.
