I've never really gotten into the twitter thing....to me it looks like super watered-down facebook

Thats not what twitter is for...it was designed to be a mobile pic and comment website, not a social networking place similar to Facebook or myspace.
For example:
I go to the movies with my girlfriend last night, I take a picture on my phone of me and her in front of the movie poster and I post it on twitter. My friends can now comment on my activity while I'm doing it.

you can't comment like you do on myspace and facebook but,
you can send a direct mesage which is private or, in your status update write @usernameofperson then what you want to say to them.
