An initial public offering (IPO) is when a company issues common stock or shares to the public for the first time. They are often issued by smaller, younger companies seeking capital to expand, but can also be done by large privately-owned companies looking to become publicly traded.

Facebook plans to raise as much as $2bn in extra capital, valuing the company at $50bn.

The latest valuation on Facebook marks a five-fold increase since May 2009, when DST’s first investment in the company put a value on it of $10bn – a figure seen as extravagant even at the time.
