Help recover a cracked CD? - Mac Penn - 11-27-2012 06:38 AM

My sister just received pictures from her 13th birthday party. We received all of the photos on a CD. Turns out the CD is cracked. There is a big crack from the center of the disk out to the edge. The company is refusing to send us another CD. Is there any way to recover the photos on my MacBook Pro, or on my father's Latitude E6400 (which is a Dell)?

Not sure if this information is useful at all, but the CD is a DVD-R Ver.2.1/1x-16x from Sony Corporation.

Thanks for the help!

Hello!

I'm afraid the answer is "No"

The data on a CD is burned to a shiny metallic layer and then covered with a protective plastic coating. If the CD is broken in two or cracked all the way through the shiny metallic layer, there is no way to get the data off the disc.

Generally once the CD is scratched or cracked all the way through the plastic and to the shiny metallic layer where the data is stored, your CD will not read that data any more.

See below for some interesting videos on how CD/DVD are made.

Sorry!
