Is this a good idea to make me more marketable to employers? - pumpkin pie - 11-27-2012 06:42 AM

I was thinking of launching a blog that's dealing with current technology news, social media news, new advances like Adobe is coming out with Adobe CS6.

I can put reviews of my experience with software. Also, some latest news, like Facebook buying Instagram. This would basically let employers know that I'm updated on things, let them seeing my writing style, etc.

What are your thoughts?

Nope..Wrong Idea!

Volunteering is going to bring a a lot more handshakes and conversations than hiding behind a computer. Find a company that you feel comfortable with and ask if they need any help on a pro bono basis....Trust me...It works every time (As long as you have skills on both the professional and social levels).

Good Luck!

I agree with Bubba. You're better off with volunteering.

*What* you know (your degree and experience) only qualifies you for a hypothetical job.
*Who* you know produces employment opportunities. It's a competitive job market in every field of work, and statistically your chances of being hired by replying to a job ad are very low. Any job that is publicly advertised will receive dozens, and even hundreds of applications. So making in roads by meeting people is *always* the best way to get ahead.

You could always try to do both, too. The blog isn't a bad idea, it's just not as good as networking through volunteering. Doing both, if you have time, can't be a bad thing.
