I just adjusted my twitter account setting so that
only confirmed people can view/follow me.
Can my followers know that my account is protected?
can they see that little lock image?

Yes, they will.. there are actually two indications that your tweets are protected.. one is the lock icon.. the other is that your tweets cannot be retweeted..
