To get one million people to follow you on people, you will need 1) to create a very valuable twitter feed like cnnbrk , 2) become a celebrity or 3) be really patient. I know that with a good strategy you can get 10 000 followers in three months, so you should be able to get in a few years, given that you get a good inertia once you get a big enough following.

you can use a software specifically designed for twitter http://scrnch.me/mufgq, follow them first and they'll follow you. You can do this on autopilot using that link so you wouldn't have to.
