For good SEO, keywords and descriptions have become redundant. You need the following:
1. Good content - no duplicate contents, rich keyword density, unique articles.
2. Good backlinks - You need to build backlinks. 10,000 low PR backlinks is not as good as 20 high PR backlinks. So be selective, and build quality backlinks.
3. Code optimisation - Crawlers hate bad coding
4. Inbound and Outbound links ratio - 2:1 either ways is good. Try to build Pyramids and Wheels of links.
5. Directory submissions.
