how can i prepare to make my business? - Aidsaj - 11-27-2012 06:58 AM

I know what type of business i want to have. I'm 19 and will start it once i finish college. I'm going to pay someone to help me develop a business plan when the time comes. I'm buying a book on starting business for dummies. How else can i prepare so that i can succeed when i start up my business?

Go to http://www.score.org/mentors and enter your zip code. On the next screen, you will get information on the nearest SCORE chapter. Call them and arrange for a free meeting with a volunteer SCORE mentor. They will guide you through the process and you can meet with them as many times as you need to.

SCORE is a nonprofit association dedicated to entrepreneur education and the formation, growth and success of small business nationwide and is a resource partner with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).

SCORE has 350 chapters in locations throughout the United States and its territories, with 13,000 volunteers nationwide. Both working and retired executives and business owners donate time and expertise as business mentors.

Ask at your college about the group of retired business owners that help new business owners get a plan. yes there is such a group I forgot their name, ask the business dept at the college! These experienced seniors can really give you good ideas.

Look up similar businesses and study them. Maybe even get a job in one and learn the ins and outs, even become a manager there so you can be close to the decision makers and really find out how it works.

Question for you: you're developing the business plan because...?
The reason I ask is some people will be wanting you pay them a lot to develop your business plan for you, when in fact you can do it yourself. Check the example I left in the source box, it's not hard to take a look at that business plan and then develop your own using that model. I DO NOT MEAN COPY. I mean use it as a model. It will save you money, and it will also ensure whoever you pay doesn't steal your business idea.
Another way to prepare is to look at other businesses, like another person suggested, and see how they're doing their thing. We have an online crafts & bargain store, at http://www.rejuvenatevita.com/voiceit. The reason I mention this blog is because we daily post on topics like advertising via social media and advertising in general. We basically post about what we're doing to market ourselves, what works and what doesn't. That's a very important part of your business: not only making it, but also marketing it.
Then, you need to research laws in your area. We only had to register our business name, but sometimes you need licenses, etc, depending on what your business is. Make sure you check that out as well.
And finally, start thinking in advance about what name you're gonna use Smile if you want to create a website, buy a domain (like we did at godaddy) and then webhosting (we got ours at hostgator). All this costs around $27 ($12 for the domain for 1 yr, $14.95/month for the webhosting). It's very little money to invest, but it has major benefits.
Lastly, I will recommend something strongly: don't hire anyone to do your marketing and advertising for you, and if you ever have doubts or want to hire someone, just research it online. 99% of the time you can do it yourself or find other ways, and it saves you a lot of money!!
Hope this helps Smile email us if you ever have any questions, or contact us via our blogs.
