If you want to send a direct message that goes straight to someone without being listed on your feed for everyone to see is there a way?

go to their page and click the direct message button

Go to their page and click 'direct message' - however, this link won't show up if they don't follow you, to prevent spam etc.

Yes you can and it's very easy, follow these institutions.
1. Go to twitter.com
2. Log in to your twitter
3. On the top right hand click on the Settings link
4. Then click on the Devices tap
5. Enter your Mobile Phone
6. Then you can then send twits from your cell phone from a text message and everyone one of your followers will see it
