Should you ask for more salary when joining a startup? - ElasticRaven - 11-27-2012 06:59 AM

It seems reasonable since there is more risk involved. Or do people generally take normal salaries but get stock in the company to counter to risk (or increase it Wink?

Stock; startups don't have cash, but they do have stock readily available.

Most people will take less. In a normal company, you have to work 10 years before you get a major promotion. At a start up you can get a major promotion, with a pay raise in one year.
Since they are not paying you that much, they have to treat you nice. You get to really stretch your wings and do new things. And it will show on your resume.

Most start ups do not offer stock. That belongs to the owners and bankers. Most start ups fail, and the ones that do survive are not like Facebook. But your enhanced resume will get you a much better paying job later.
