In twitter, when a follower mentions you in their tweet, you're supposed to get a notification that appears on the right hand pane of the website against the @username tab, right?
I do not get any notification but my friends send out tweets mentioning me. What is the problem with my account? Is it something to do with the settings or something???

im not sure wether you are ment to have they being putting an @ at the start of your name or simply just the name it depends on that

You won't receive a notification when someone puts @maartenvleeuwen (my Twitter account) in their tweet.
You'll receive a notification if someone that you follow (and follows you back) sents you a Direct Message (DM). Theirs a difference between a @mention and a DM.
A @mention is public and a DM is private (eyes only).
If you wish to be more in control of your conversations I suggest you use a tool to monitor your @mentions, direct mentions and even your searchs. Nowadays these tools all have the options to add links/messages to Facebook and Twitter too.
