They must give you an option at the bottom of the email to opt out or it will direct you to the twitter settings page.

Do you mean DMs? Only people you are following can direct message you so just be more discerning who you follow and unfollow anyone who spams you. If you are getting spammy @messages click on the senders name and choose 'block' - hope this helps
