I put together the website http://www.TheToddlerTrain.com as a way to learn a bit about running an internet business but, even though it is published, I can't see it on any search engine no matter how many pages I look through. So I have two questions: How to you get a site ranked when you are starting from the beginning; and my site is focussed on UK customers, how would the search engines work out which country I am focusing on? You'd probably want to start by giving your site some publicity or purchase ad clicks from google. One way to get it noticed is to start linking it on your facebook or twitter accounts. Also forums about baby stuff will be a great way to get ideas on what people want and where they are purchasing things from. Link your website as much as possible on the net just like I have done with this post. Check it out when you get a moment.

Social media is the quickest instant way to get traffic - share your site to facebook friends, twitter followers, and go help people on forums who have questions about baby products.
The more long term solution is to do SEO on your website so you can rank closer to #1 on google so people find you for free and is a great ROI. Free traffic is good traffic.

Hi Neil,
If you want a quick way to gain more traffic and recognition, placing Google Ads and Facebook Ads will be the best bet. Simply bid on Keywords with high search volume but low compettion related to your theme so that you don't have to spend much but still get a good amount of traffic.
The reason you do not appear in the search results is because you probably didn't optimize your website yet. You should learn the basics of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) so that you website will have a chance of appearing.
For beginners, you should learn about the on-page optimization first such as Title Tag, URL, Keyword Research, Anchor Text, Image SEO, and etc.

What other people mentioned above works too, Social Media. This is different from optimizing your website, instead you are doing Social Media marketing. If you decided to go with Social Media, then you shold create a Facebook, Twitter or Pinterest page and optimize it. Gather fans and followers which then direct them back to your website.

You will need to use various methods to drive traffic. You can purchase AdWords, use social media websites and backlinking. The only way your website will be successful is to increase it's search engine ranking. You will need quality content and fans and followers from social media. You can hold contests and give away a free item. How about a newsletter of tips? Contact an SEO company or read tutorials if you need help.
