pretty much, yeah - you arent actually getting humans to like your page, you are just pretending to be popular in hope that other people will like the page too

That's not true. Just like other advertising networks, advertising on Facebook about your page/website has many benefits. Just like you're shown page recommendations alongside your FB page, other prospective users are shown ads by other advertisers who find them relevant to their business.
