Could anyone tell me how to integrate the facebook like button on the home page into my joomla based website? Opened a custom HTML module in the module manager. Unable to go further than that.

Get the code from here http://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/plugins/like/ and paste it in your Custom HTML module. Assign the available position for your module and you are done.
